About Valves
Valves find a wide range of applications in today’s world. They are commonly used in manufacturing industries, industrial power plants, corporate offices and even homes. They are used in plumbing fittings, plumbing appliances and other related applications. They are primarily used to control or restrict the flow of liquid or gas in a pipe. There are two main categories of valves which are a manual valve and automated valve. Some commonly used manual valves are the ball valve, butterfly, plug, gate globe, needle poppet and spool valve. Some commonly used automatic valves are the pressure reducing valve, altitude valve, back-pressure sustaining regulator, surge arrestor, level control and hydraulic check valve. Automatic control valves control the pressure or flow of liquid or gas by using a pressure control system. Flow control valves respond to signals which are general by independent devices such as flow meters, temperature gauges. They are fitted with actuators and positioners which help regulate the flow of liquid accurately. They do not require an external power source for opening or closing the valve as the fluid pressure is strong enough to control the pressure. Water control valves use hydraulic actuators which respond to the change in water pressure to open or close the tap.
Some automatic flow control valves use an idle air control method to regulate the flow of fluid. They are used in plumbing, gas regulators, cold valves and safety valves. Pressure reducing valves are designed to balance high upstream pressure and low downstream pressure. Some types of pressure reducing valves are low flow bypass, dual pilot, check valve, back pressure valve and open wide control. Altitude control valves are single acting in nature and they automatically regulate pressure with respect to altitude. They come in sizes ranging from 40 to 900 mm and can take a max pressure of 700 psi. Back-pressure sustaining valves are used to prevent drafting supply of upstream pressure. They regulate the inlet and outlet pressure by using an adjustable spring-loaded balancing valve. They are designed to handle a maximum pressure of 400 psi at a temperature of 80 degree Celsius. Hydraulic control valves are equipped with a hydraulic cylinder which adjusts the opening and closing speed accordingly to prevent flow reversal. Safety valves are used to contain dangerous liquids or gases at high pressure. A smaller version of them is used in household plumbing appliances.
