Concrete is one of the most used man-made materials in the world, especially in the UAE where there is a construction boom, and a huge demand for concrete works and concrete products. With the growing construction industry in the UAE, concrete manufacturing and concrete technology played an important role in ensuring that residential, commercial and industrial structures are strong, durable and of high quality.
In the UAE, concrete is produced in different forms such as ready-mixed concrete, dry mix concrete, premix concrete, precast concrete, concrete masonry, and roller-compacted concrete.
Ready-mixed concrete is the most common form of concrete in the UAE. This form of concrete is delivered from concrete batching plants to the construction sites using concrete handling equipment such as truck-mounted transit mixers. Each batch of ready-mixed concrete is tailor-made according to the specification of the contractor resulting in a precise mixture. In this form, concrete curing is done on site after it is poured into site-specific forms.
Precast concrete is produced by casting concrete in a reusable mould or form which is then cured in a controlled environment or certain factory setting, transported to the construction site, and then installed. Some examples of these are concrete bricks and paving stones which are used as concrete flooring. Precast concrete is created in ideal and controlled manufacturing conditions facilitating better use of industrial raw materials, and thus less material consumption. Controlling the climactic conditions in manufacturing precast concrete allows accurate control of tolerances and produces high quality concretes. Precast concrete also provides superior fire resistance and sound control making it a popular material for constructing buildings in the UAE. Precast concrete industry is now growing in the UAE market because of cheaper cost of labor and it is cheaper than other concrete alternatives such as ready-mix concrete and on-site cast concretes. Currently, precast concrete comprises roughly 30% of the UAE’s concrete construction market and its share is increasing.
Concrete masonry is widely used in the construction of small and large structures in the UAE because it is economical, energy efficient, fire-resistant and easily maintained. The most common application of concrete masonry is for building walls, firesafe enclosures of stairwells, elevator shafts and storage vaults. These softwares provide the users the chance to choose their preferred method of mix design and input material data to produce accurate mix designs. Another advanced step in concrete technology in the UAE is the use of self-consolidating concrete or self-compacting concrete. This high-performance concrete is highly flowable, non-segregating, and spreads into place, fills formwork, and encapsulates even the most congested reinforcement with or without any mechanical vibration. This concrete technology also proved to be economically and environmentally viable especially in the modern-day construction activities in the UAE.
