The Blue Charm of Sharjah: Central Souq

Pick up a five dirham note and one can see the image of the Central Souq. This covered market located in the heart of Sharjah is popularly known as ‘the Blue Souq’ for its magnificent blue-tiled domes.

This twin column shaped building was built in 1978 and is one of the oldest shopping centers in the region. Positioned strategically next to the Khalid Lagoon and at the tip of the Buheira Corniche, it is an iconic landmark of the UAE and an Islamic architectural beauty.

The Souq consist of more than 600 shops and the twin buildings are connected by internal bridges. One building features electronics, perfumes, semi -precious stones, rugs and curios and the other features gold and silver jewelry shops.

Most of the shops in the Souq are 25 years old or more, often run by the same family since the Souq opened in 1979. From antiques to traditional handicrafts collected across the entire Middle East, one can discover unique treasures and bargains that are not found in the modern shopping malls.

Amidst all the hustle and bustle of the city, the Souq is a tranquil place to be. In the evenings, the Blue Souq glows because of the special lighting effects. This makes the Central Souq a vital stop for Shoppers and architecture lovers, day or night.
