About Laboratory

A laboratory is an establishment which is set up near a research facility or a medical healthcare facility. It is equipped with different types of medical and diagnostic equipment which is used to detect and treat medical ailments and different diseases. Most clinical laboratories are designed to focus on applied science and educational purposes. They are also used for the research and development of medicines and analysing new diseases and inventing a cure for them. A medical laboratory houses different staff such as pathologists, clinical biochemists, biomedical analyst, biomedical scientist, pathologist assistant, laboratory technician, medical laboratory assistant and phlembotomist.

Laboratories are located near hospitals, nursing homes, medical camps and other healthcare establishments. Most of them are attached to hospitals for easier access and also to address patient needs. Private or community laboratories are fully equipped with special medical equipment which is used to process and analyse patient's specimens and much more. These establishments are owned by general practitioners, insurance companies, clinical research sites and other health clinics. There are three types of medical laboratories which are constructed according to the investigations which are carried out. Most of them are designed to carry out clinical pathology, haematology, histopathology and cytology. Some medical test centres conduct clinical microbiology operations such as bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, immunology and serology. Some of them are designed to conduct clinical biochemical applications such as biochemical analysis, hormonal analysis, semen analysis and much more. These test centres are used in blood banks to analyse the type of blood, blood constitution and nature of blood. The equipment used in blood bank laboratories are not only used to analyse the blood but also used to detect any ailments present in the blood and calculate the number of white blood cells present in the bloodstream.

A medical laboratory is equipped with a specimen processing units which are attached to a microscope. The microscope helps lab technicians analyse the nature and composition of the specimen and determine aspects surrounding them. Lab technicians us vacutainer tubes to collect blood, urine, stool and other specimens. They come in plastic bags which makes it easier for analysis and despatch.

Clinical laboratories deal with conducting four major tests which are urine test, blood test, stool test and tumour test. The urine analysis test deals with detecting cells and chemicals present in the urine. In this test, the lab technicians analyse the consistency of the urine, its nature and viscosity of the urine. They also check for the presence of blood, protein and other related substances. Laboratory equipment is designed to detect the presence of tumours in the human body by using tumour markers to determine the presence of cancer cells in the body. Some popular laboratory equipment includes ECG machines, blood sample analysers, urine sample analyser, stool analyser, X-Ray machine, electron microscope, MRI machines and electron-cardiograms.
