Access platforms also known as work platforms are constructed to give construction workers access to work areas of the building under construction. They are used for construction, building maintenance, and electric work. There are various kinds of access platforms that are used in the construction industry such as mobile towers, powered access platforms, boom lifts, scissors lifts and personnel lifts. Mobile towers are also known as mobile scaffolds and have been used extensively in the construction industry. The advantages of mobile towers are that they could be easily moved to any location at the construction site because of the wheels installed at the base of the tower and therefore it allows workers to access long ranges of the building.

Powered access platforms are mounted on vehicles and are used when workers just need to access the exteriors of a building. Powered access platforms give workers access to different levels of the same building. There are two kinds of boom lifts such as the articulated booms and telescopic booms. Boom lifts enable workers access areas by going around certain obstructions like trees or canopies whereas telescopic booms give workers the required height needed to access sections of the work area. Scissors lifts are different from boom lifts as they can only extend vertically and do not have the added advantage of reaching over obstacles. But scissors lifts have a larger lifting capacity and more platform area to work with.
