Sports centers, sports academies, and other multi-purpose sports institutions usually require special and unique flooring. The two basic types of sports floors are area-elastic and point-elastic, while the other two are hybrids of these two types. The difference between these types of flooring is the distance of change or disfiguration of the floor from the weight bearing area. Area-elastic flooring has a large distance of change or deformation from the weight bearing area. This makes this type of flooring deflection-resistant. Point-elastic floors have a low deformation area. Here, the change in the surface, due to added weight, is limited to little or no space around the weight-bearing area.

Some sports like indoor track, tennis, weightlifting, basketball and futsal require specific flooring requirements. Other sports like horse racing needs special sports flooring, which is engineered to prevent injury. This flooring covers the majority of the area like stables, tracks, breeding areas, etc and is similar to natural ground cover. Most sports flooring is made of natural or synthetic material or a mix of the two. Some common material includes maple hardwood, polyurethane, sports linoleum, vulcanized rubber and sports vinyl.
