About Book Bindings

Book binding helps secure the pages of a book and increase its shelf life to a great extent. Book binders use different methods to bind books; they also bind dissertations, portfolios, pitch documents, calenders, Boucher and much more. They bind books by saddle stitching, perfect binding, section sewn, spiral binding, cased in wiro binding, pamphlet binding, Coptic binding, Japanese binding and screw post binding. Saddle stitching is the most economical binding method as the pages can be folded, creased or stapled together with long jaws which are designed for saddle stitching. This type of binding is best suited for lookbooks, booklets, magazines with less page count. The perfect binding is used for paperback or softcover books. They are best suited for manuals, catalogues and annuals as the pages are folded into sections and glued with a heavier printed wrap on the spine with a strong adhesive. However, it is not the strongest form of binding and is mainly suited for hardcover binds. This type of binding enhances the lay flat qualities of the book which depends on the thickness of the cover, the thickness of pages and the type of paper used. It is the most affordable type of binding as it is used to ensure that there are different types of services accordingly. Section sewing method is the most secure binding method as the pages are folded together into sections and each section is later sewn into a spine. Section sewn books will be able to lay flat due to their design.

Spiral binding or the wire binding is the most used type of book binding as it allows the user to turn the page by 360 degrees. This is also known as coil binding and comprises of a PVC filament which is rolled into the shape of the spring. They come in different colours and soft covers of different designs can be added to give the book an attractive appeal. Spiral sizes range from 6 millimetres to 50 millimetres so books with up to 500 sheets can be bound easily. They are highly durable as the coil is crush resistant. The shape of the coil is designed to eliminate the possibility of the pages from falling out. Documents like calendars, diaries, pads and brochures can be spiral bound. The cased in wiro binding is an attractive type of spiral binding as it is designed to hide the wire from the outside. In pamphlet binding, a single section which is known as a signature is sewn with a running stitch down the spine which is alternate to saddle stitching. This method of book binding gives you an elegant finish to your book. Coptic binding is a non- adhesive form of binding which was invented by Egyptians. In this method, signatures are sewn together through folds and attached to one another through loosely covered boards by stitching it in a chain-like manner. The screw post binding method enables the user to add or remove pages; in this method screws are used to hold the pages together between the covering boards.
