Cable Trays

Cable trays or cable support systems are used to support electrical wiring, power cables, connectivity cables and other cables in buildings. These wire and cable supports are a more effective alternative to open wiring and electrical conduit systems. Cable tray systems are generally used in industrial establishments, commercial buildings, public facilities and residential buildings for easy cable support and managements and where timely cable and wire changes are to be made. Cable trays are specially designed to support various wires and cables like optical cables, telephone wires, high-voltage power lines, and power distribution cables.

Cable trays can be categorized into six types based on their design and applications. Its various types include solid bottom trays, channel trays, trough trays, single rail trays, ladder trays and wire mesh trays. Ladder trays are the most common type of cable tray systems used, making up about 75% of all cable trays. The trays are used for long intermediate support applications. Solid bottom trays are ideal for minimum heat-generation applications and provide sensitive circuits with a protective shield. Wire mesh trays are used to support light-weight cables like telephone and fiber optic cables, while most low-voltage power cable applications require the use of single rail trays. Trough trays are used in heat generating applications, due to its moderately ventilative design and spaced cable support configuration.

In addition to the various types of cable trays, they are manufactured with several variations in the base material, design and type of finish. These variations in cable tray systems differ with their application and purpose. Most cable trays are manufactured using materials that are highly resistant to corrosion like stainless steel and other alloys of steel and aluminium. They also vary in the type of finish provided to improve its properties for special purpose applications. High-corrosive environments and outdoor applications generally require trays that are specially produced and treated with high resistance to corrosion.
