About Genset Synchronizing

Genset Synchronizing

When a generator is used to power an electrical grid to compensate the power shortage that may occur any time, it is very crucial for the generator to match the frequency with the main-network so that power delivers to the electrical grid. If the Generator (AC) fails to match its frequency with the main network (electrical grid), the generated power is not delivered to the electrical grid. In a generator (DC), it has to match the speed or field excitation to synchronize with the electrical grid. The process of matching the frequency and speed of the sub-network with the main-network is called synchronization.

In this system, Generator is the source and sub-network in the system and electrical grid is the main-network. Before initiating the synchronization process, one has to take care of certain conditions. Firstly, the sub-network should be set with equal line voltage, phase sequence, phase angle, frequency and waveform as the electrical grid. While failing to set this initial configuration, the whole system might crumble because of short circuit and may also damage the generator and the grid.

The Genset panel uses a device to indicate the degree of synchronization between the networks which is called the SYNCHROSCOPE. The sychroscope reads the frequencies and displays the relative frequencies of the both the networks. The sychroscope indicates needle between the marks "fast" and "slow", and exactly between these two marks lies the optimum frequency for the synchronization.

If all initial criteria are met, we could easily achieve an optimum degree of synchronization without damaging either system. And to carry out this task, the Genset panels are used to do the configuration to synchronize the generator & main network automatically. Genset panels are automated but also provided with manual controls for backup.
