An uninterruptible power supply or source (UPS) is a device that provides emergency backup power when the main power source fails. A UPS is not the same as a standby generator or other emergency power systems. Unlike the latter, a UPS provides immediate protection from loss of input power, without an interruption in the flow of power. It does so by supplying energy stored in backup batteries, flywheels or super-capacitors. A UPS supplies emergency power only for a very limited period, usually a few minutes.
