Dewatering
Dewatering is the term used to refer to the draining of groundwater or surface water from a construction or mining site. Dewatering is done at construction sites to remove water accumulated in trenches or in areas with a high water table. The process of dewatering is carried out to prevent groundwater inflows from flooding the construction site. It is also done to control pore water pressure and to improve safety and slope stability.
There are different methods through which dewatering is carried out such as groundwater control by exclusion and ground water control by pumping. When groundwater is controlled by exclusion, a wall is constructed to keep water out of the excavation. Pumping is the simplest method to drain groundwater. In this method, the water is allowed to enter the site and is then pumped out.
