A Busbar is used in electrical power distribution and is enclosed within bus ducts. It is a metallic strap housed inside switchgear, panel boards or busway enclosures for effective high current power distribution. In electric switch yards, busbars are used to connect switch bars to high voltage equipment. They are used to connect low voltage equipment to battery banks. Most busbars are not insulated and are relatively stiff in design so that they can be supported by insulated pillars.

A plug-in busway system consists of disconnected switches which allow other devices to get mounted on the system. In this manner, it can be used to distribute power throughout the building.
