The electric motor is a great example of 1st law of thermodynamics which dictates that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; energy can only be transferred from one form to another. The electric motor is a device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. It employs the reverse mechanism of an electric generator which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. The interference between the magnetic field inside the motor and the winding current generates a compelling force to rotate the shaft. The electric motor design uses many fundamental forces such as electricity, magnetism, momentum, inertia, etc to make it function.

Motor has many internal parts such as rotor, stator, commutator and windings. The load of the motor is dependent on its windings that produce a counter magnetic field against the natural magnetic field generated by the magnets. There are two types of electric motors in general, AC and DC motors. AC motors are powered by DC sources such as batteries and DC motors are powered by AC sources generators and power grid. There is also another type of motor that functions on both AC and DC sources. There are many types of electric motors to accomplish various needs and functionalities.
