Forklifts are material handling equipment that moves materials within a specific location. Manual, electric, and diesel are the most common models. Warehouses prefer Electric forklifts that work on lead-acid batteries for power. Class 1, 2, and 3 forklifts are electric, while Class 4 and 5 trucks run on propane, natural gas, gasoline, or diesel.
Manual forklifts are hydraulic machines that use oil to power the lifting mechanism. The operator pumps oil by pushing the handlebar up and down to raise the forks and lift the load.
Electric forklifts are efficient and eco-friendly vehicles that carry up to 70000 lbs. They are great for indoor use. Lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries are the two battery options that electric forklifts use. There is a wide range of electric-powered forklifts with both battery charging options.
Lead-acid electric forklifts achieve a lifespan of 1400 charging cycles and maintain a battery efficiency of 70%. In contrast, Li-ion electric forklifts reach a lifespan of 4000 charging cycles with a battery efficiency of 95%. Notably, while lead-acid forklifts need a ventilated space for charging, Li-ion forklifts do not require this.
Lead-acid forklifts demand regular maintenance, whereas Li-ion forklifts need minimal upkeep. For multi-shift operations, lead-acid forklifts necessitate additional batteries, but Li-ion forklifts can charge sufficiently for multi-shift use.
When selecting a forklift, the choice between gas-powered and electric models often depends on your specific needs and working environment:
Power Source | Advantages | Disadvantages | Safety Considerations |
---|---|---|---|
Manual | Cost-effective, simple operation, no fuel required, good for small spaces | Limited lifting capacity, requires physical effort, not suitable for heavy or high-volume tasks | Requires physical exertion, risk of muscle strain |
Diesel | Flexible, fuel efficient, good outdoors, cheaper to buy, easy maintenance, quick refuelling | Produces exhaust fumes, noisy, bulky, requires skill | Manage fume hazards, fuel spillage, and hot exhausts |
LPG | Flexible, suitable indoors/outdoors, more manoeuvrable, quieter, cheapest to buy | Fume issues, higher fuel and maintenance costs, refuelling challenges, require skill | Manage fume hazards in confined spaces, ensure proper fuel storage |
Electric | Eco-friendly, quiet, highly manoeuvrable, cheap to run and maintain, easy to operate | High initial cost, requires charging space, power cuts risk, needs smooth surfaces, limited outdoor usage | Manage fume hazards during charging, requires additional safety training |
Counterbalance trucks are a widely used type of forklift that can lift up to 3000kgs or even more and reach a height of 6 meters. A large weight at the back counterbalances the weight of the load on the chassis. Intermediate mast and low mast trucks are also available for industries that deal with lighter or moderate-weight loads.
Toyota, Heli, Bobcat, Caterpillar, Clark, Cummins, Doosan, Daewoo, and Genie manufacture heavy lift trucks that lift up to 60000kgs. They supply giant counterbalance forklifts, reach stackers, full or empty container handlers and many more.
