The traditional methods of TV broadcasting, particularly cable TV offers a one-way flow of information, with a one-to-many transmission of data. Combining regular television, with ease of accessibility of the Internet is what IPTV services are all about. Internet Television allows a two-way flow of information, where only the data selected by the user is transmitted to the user’s device or receiver. This single-stream or unicast broadcasting technology is what makes Internet television unique in comparison to Satellite and cable television. In simple terms, Internet Television uses Internet Protocol to transfer live or recorded data from the source to the user using a broadband or wireless internet connection. The broadcasted data is transferred the same way email attachments and media are sent using email and instant messenger services. The data is broken down into data ‘packets’ at the source and are transferred and reassembled at the user’s end and displayed. Internet TV can be accessed using a computer, laptop, smartphone, smart TV or a receiver attached to a regular TV.
IPTV services, in general, are categorized into three categories of services available to users. These include: Simulcasting or Live Internet Television - This service allows users to access broadcast television, by streaming the selected channel from the source provider. This is the same as watching regular cable or satellite television, with an advantage of zero delay in data transmission. Video on Demand is a service widely used today, in homes, dorms, and hostels over the world. Video on demand providers allow customers or users to select from a catalog or list of available shows and movies that they can watch any number of times with a one-time payment.
Time-Shifted services allow internet television users to watch shows and movies that were broadcasted in the past, either a few hours ago or a few weeks ago. These services stream data from a central DVR at the source that records previously broadcasted media, shows, and movies, allowing users to watch their favorite shows at their convenience.
These services require internet connection capable of adequate download and upload speeds for smooth streaming of data. With the availability of wireless and broadband services with high-bandwidth speeds in Sharjah and across the Emirates, a significant portion of people opt for Internet television services. These service providers offer their services and a range of equipment to home-users and other customers. Many hotels in Sharjah use IPTV services to provide customers with first-class amenities, and quality service. IPTV suppliers can be found in and around Sharjah in places like Sooq Al Soor and Al Arouba Street.
